Earlier this month, 20th Century Fox announced thatAlvin and The Chipmunks: The Road Chipwill be moving up a few days, from December 23 to December 18. This newrelease dateputs the animated sequel squarely up against perhaps the most anticipated movie of the year, Disney and LucasFilm’sStar Wars: The Force Awakens, along with Universal Pictures’Sisters. While we’ll have to wait a few more weeks to see how these chipmunks fare against the beloved characters from a galaxy far, far away, the studio has released a new trailer forAlvin and The Chipmunks: The Road Chip.
Through a series of misunderstandings,Alvin, Simon and Theodore come to believe that Dave is going to propose to his new girlfriend in New York City…And dump them. They have three days to get to him and stop the proposal, saving themselves not only from losing Dave but possibly from gaining a terrible stepbrother. Will they be able to pull off such a feat and bring the world’s most unique pop group back to international stardom?

Jason Leereturns as Dave, withJustin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler andJesse McCartneyall returning to voice the iconicChipmunks. This latest sequel also introduces newcomerBella Thornein alive action role, alongsideTony Hale,Anna Faris,Kaley Cuoco,Christina Applegate, Kimberly Williams-Paisley and Josh Green. Based on the beloved characters created by Ross Bagdasarian, Walt Becker directs from a screenplay byAdam Sztykiel.
The Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise has certainly been a lucrative one for 20th Century Fox. The first entry, 2007’sAlvin and the Chipmunks, earned $361.3 million domestic from a $60 million budget, paving the way for 2009’sAlvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakuel, which took in $443.1 million at thebox officefrom a $75 million. The last entry, 2011’sAlvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked, dropped a bit from its predecessor, but still proved the franchise had staying power, bringing in $342.6 million worldwide from a $75 million budget
The introduction of beloved young actressBella Thornecould propel the franchise to new heights, bringing in a whole new fan base for the animated movie, but it certainly will have a tough road ahead, going up againstStar Wars: The Force Awakens.
