Learn about the Stillbaby Syndrome in Death Stranding 2, a unique phenomenon that affects some pregnant mothers in-game.

In Death Stranding 2, you will come across mothers who are struck with the Stillbaby Syndrome. The strange affliction also affects Rainy, one of the crew of the DHV Magellan. We first hear about this while learning about Rainy’s backstory. During that, Fragile mentions that Rainy has been suffering from the Stillbaby syndrome, where her baby got stuck at seven months.

What Is Stillbaby Syndrome in Death Stranding 2?

In Stillbaby Syndrome, the fetus stops growing at about seven months. The fetus isn’t dead, but it doesn’t move as if it is frozen in time. Removal of the baby from the womb through any treatment or C-section results in death. Tarman mentions that the Stillbaby Syndrome is one of the contributing factors to the low birth rate. It doesn’t affect all pregnancies, but still a noticeable percentage.

What’s Causing Stillbaby Syndrome in Death Stranding 2?

Tarmanmentions that Stillbaby Syndrome might be happening due to an imbalance in the Beach itself. Individual Beaches are governed by an “Upper Beach” (exclamation marks given in-game), which exists “on a higher plane.”

Tarman states that the chiral network’s expansion across the whole UCA “may have inadvertently disrupted the link to that [Upper] Beach.” The mission of connecting the entirety of Australia to the chiral network may resolve this disruption and, in effect, address the problem of Stillbaby Syndrome.

Quite interestingly, BB units were also seven-month-old fetuses. Based on this, Dollman theorizes that “the Beach might very well influence the unborn.”

Death Stranding 2: Other Characters Affected by Stillbaby Syndrome

The pregnant woman we meet inVilla Libre (La Madre)also complains that her baby should have been born a long time ago, but it is as if it’s stuck. We also learn about more stillmothers atThe Motherhood location. The doctor present in the location is able to remove a baby from a stillmother’ womb without resorting to invasive surgery with the help of her chiral hands.
