Dermot Mulroneyhas teased the possibility ofMy Best Friend’s Weddinggetting the sequel treatment, nearly 30 years after the release of the original hit comedy that positionedCameron DiazandJulia Robertsinthe ultimate love triangle. Fans of the beloved ’90s romantic comedy, which is widely regarded as one of the best of its genre, may want to say a little prayer for it to actually happen, as Mulroney admits that the project is only in the very early stages of being discussed at the moment, so you will have to keep wishin' and hopin'.

Mulroney confirmed to the New York Post that “there is talk of a sequel” toMy Best Friend’s Wedding, while promoting his Netflix seriesThe Hunting Wives. “I know nothing about it,” he said of the potential follow-up. “Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote.”

Top 10 Nostalgic ’80s and ’90s Wedding Comedies

Get ready for cuffing season by relaxing with these top 10 romantic comedy throwbacks from the ’80s and ’90s.

My Best Friend’s Weddingstars Mulroney and rom-com powerhouse Julia Roberts as Michael and Julianne, two childhood friends who made a pact with one another to get married to each other if they are both still single by age 28. As that deadline approaches, Michael makes the surprise announcement that he is marrying 20-year-old Kimberly “Kimmy” Wallace, which is where Diaz enters the picture. The new union makes Julianne realize that she is in love with Michael, prompting her to try and break up the wedding before they exchange vows.

Julianne even goes so far as enlisting her gay best friend George (Rupert Everett) as her fiancé, pretending they are engaged in a bid to make Michael jealous. George wants to be a supportive friend, but he doesn’t necessarily agree with her acts of sabotage, so he decides to ham it up as the lovestruck sidekick. In one particularly memorable scene, he embarrasses Julianne at lunch with the wedding party, singing “I Say a Little Prayer” as the whole restaurant joins in, delivering a hilariously hearty (and heartfelt) rendition of the Dionne Warwick classic.

“The whole thing was a dream,” Mulroney recalled of making the film. “I knew even when I got the audition for it with Julia, like waiting in line with a whole bunch of other guys, and I got the role. I knew – and all of Hollywood knew – it was going to be an exceptional movie.”
