Ron Howardsays that a sequel to the 2018 filmSolois not in the works from LucasFilms. The director said that any word that a film is coming is strictly from the fans and that the studio has other priorities. Right now, the most extensive discussion about theSolosequel comes from enthusiastic fans in online forums such asStar Warsfan websites,YouTube channels, and message boards.

“The only discussion that I’m aware of about a sequel for ‘Solo’ is coming from the fans at this point.”

Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo

Plot points ofSolointroduced a young Han Solo, played by Alden Ehrenreich (Brave New World), and Lando Calrissian, portrayed by Donald Glover (Atlanta). The film was intended to be the starting point for more stories to expand on these characters; however, that changed when the first Star Wars prequel bombed at the theaters, only pulling in $392 million globally, which is part of the reason Howard does not see the studio investing in another film.The releasedid not match the expectations of the studio.

Variety reports that Howard has positive things to say about the first film, however, and that he loved the experience of working on the film and was enthusiastic about its potential success before its release.

“I came in eager to help, felt like I could, and had a blast. Normally it takes three years, but I worked eight months and had an experience. I feel very good about the way it turned out. I loved the way it played to audiences, which I witnessed. All of that I am able to feel good about.”

Ron Howard on Why Solo May Have Bombed

Solodirector Ron Howard believes that perhaps the reason thatSolodid not do well at the box office could have been that it was simply “too nostalgic.” The director told Variety he believes that perhaps it was not the right approach to theStar Warsstory at the time. “Going back and revisiting an origin story for a beloved character may not be what the fans were looking for.”

In the meantime, fans can still enjoy plenty of Star Wars characters and storylines; however, with the many streaming shows available on Disney+, includingThe Mandalorian,which premieres its third season in March,The Acolyte, Rangers of the New Republic, Star Wars: Lando, A Droid Story,andAhsoka.
