Electronic Arts is teaming up with Koei Tecmo for the next hunting game project set in feudal Japan.

EA Teams Up with Koei Tecmo to Deliver “Next Great Hunting Game”

Two major companies are partnering up to work on the “next great hunting game”. A collaboration between EA Originals and Koei Tecmo has been announced, as they look to be producing a game set to rival theMonster Hunterfranchise.

The press release described the game to be an original IP and will be a “AAA experience based in feudal Japan”. They were light on the details, but we can expect more info to be dropping later this month. The studio Omega Force will be putting forth this new game, and are also behind such titles asHyrule Warriorsand Dynasty Warriors as well as Musou-type games such asFire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes.

Koei Tecmo

A Japanese Fantasy

According to General Manager Jeff Gamon of EA Partners, Koei Tecmo has “elevated the hunting genre to the next level” and has also brought together their “talent for combat gameplay” and “innovative mechanics”.

While Koei Tecmo boss Yosuke Hayashi believes that the “EA Team fully embraces” their “creative independence”. This sounds like a great match-up of companies and will be great to see what this combination of partnerships will come up with. Players could be hunting fantasy-styled monsters or even yokai demons giving a Nioh flavour. Titles such asGhost of Tsushimahave shown feudal Japan as a stunning setting for games, but a further fantasy elemental could be a further wild card in what we’ll be getting from a hunting game.

Whether we’ll be hunting large-styled creatures as you do inMonster Hunter Riseto fashion ourselves new armor. Or maybe we have a new kind of foe to track down is currently unknown.

This isn’t the only title that seems to be setting their game in feudal Japan. Recently there was news of another project in the works under former Witcher 3 veterans withstudio Dark Passengeralso producing a game but an online action multiplayer. Assassin’s Creed is also heading to Japan in the recently announcedAssassin’s Creed Codename Red, a mainline game with “shinobi fantasy”. Safe to say we are going to be spoilt for choice when it comes to types of games set in Japan.
