Devil May Cry

Created by Hideki Kamiya and developed by Capcom,Devil May Crywas initially meant to be developed as an entry inthe popular franchiseResident Evilbefore seeing a pivot shift fromResident Evil 4to the now beloved action classic. The first game, Devil May Cry, was released in 2001 for PlayStation 2, instantly becoming a genre-defining classic of high-energy battles; its protagonist, the demon-slaying Dante, became a flagship character for Sony. The game would spawn several sequels, includingDevil May Cry 2(2003),Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening(2005),Devil May Cry 4(2008)DmC: Devil May Cry(2013), andDevil May Cry 5(2019).The game series would sell over 32 million worldwide, resulting in many spin-offs, merchandise, and other entertainment mediums.

Devil May Crywould see its first animated series in 2007 inDevil May Cry: The Animatedseries. However, this single-season series did not satisfy the wants of existing fans, with the lack of action and the depiction of Dante falling flat for many. While Netflix’sDevil May Cryis the second attempt to create a long-running series for the game franchise, for many, it is poised to be the quintessential adaptationwith the underwhelming performance of the 2007 attempt.

The Proven Success of the Team behind ‘Devil May Cry’

Netflix’sCastlevaniaran for four seasons to much critical praise. Created by Warren Ellis and produced and produced by Frederator Studios and Shankar Animation, the show boasted a sleek, dark gothic visual style that perfectly brought the world to life.Devil May Crysees one notable name returning to the project in Adi Shankar, whose studio was integral in bringingCastlevaniaand its sequelCastlevania: Nocturneto life. Adi Shankar, known for his enthusiastic and eccentric persona and love of all things dark and nerdy, is no stranger to pushing boundaries and mashing styles up while still maintaining loyalty to the source material.Saying that the series is set to be “by a DMC fan for DMC fans” should have the existing fandom excited.

Working with him is writer Alex Larsen, who also worked with Shankar on the Netflix miniseriesCaptain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix.Studio Mir will also be bringing their expertise to the production, with the studio having worked on a wide range of hit animated shows and movies, includingthe subversiveThe Legend of Korra(2012-2014) andThe Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf(2021).Voice actor Johnny Yong Bosch will be responsible for bringing Dante to life. Jonny Yong Bosch has seen success in both live-action and animated, but his role as Kaneda in the English dub of 1988’s Akira has long had him cemented as a fan-favorite.

What We Know About the Plot and Format of ‘Devil May Cry’

The series will loosely adapt the storyline ofDevil May Cry 3while incorporating elements from its prequel manga. We also know that it will focus on Dante’s past and his relationship with his twin brother Vergil and his partnership with Lady. Demonic battles are already a given, but an opening of demonic portals spewing forth monsters would lead us to believe it is going to be action-packed throughout. Still, the series has Dante, the half-demon mercenary and orphaned demon hunter-for-hire, as the central protagonist. While no other characters have been confirmed, the fandom is hoping to see other staples such as Nero, as well as notable appearances fromDevil May Cry 3like Trish, J.D. Morrison and Arkham.
