Grim Guardians Demon Purge is a new take on breathing life intoCastlevania-styled games.
Grim Guardians Demon Purge is a New 2D Co-Op Game Inspired by Castlevania
Studio Inti Creates’, the team behind vintage-style 2D action platformers, has just announced their latest project. Grim Guardians: Demon Purge is a new 2D platformer that adds a pinch of co-op.
The team previously worked onBloodstained: Curse of the Moon, another 2D action platformer that takes place in the same universe asBloodstained: Ritual of the Night. Maybe we’ll get to see some character cameos, such asMiriamorZangetsu?

The Grimmest Guardians
Grim Guardians: Demon Purge is the tale of two sisters that return to their former school, only to discover that demons have run amok and destroyed the place. There’s also a new demonic castle that looms over the horizon, which is bad. An evil, ancient magic has turned the school grounds into a part of the Demon Realm.
It will be up to siblings Shinobu and Maya to investigate the cause of this invasion and get rid of the demonic presence. The pair in Grim Guardians: Demon Purge aren’t your helpless maidens. In fact, they’re far from it. At the start of the game, it is already established that they’re seasoned Demon Hunters.

Siblings of Destruction
Maya Kazimono, the younger of the two, excels in tight melee combat. Among the two, she seems to be the shyer, more reserved one. She prefers getting up close and personal with the demons, slashing them with her blades. Maya can also create various objects from origami paper folding.
In one instance in the trailer, we can see that Maya creates jumpable terrain by creating an origami crane that the sisters can cross on. She can also assemble her papers into rotating ninja stars that can cut up enemies into shreds.

Next up is Shinobu Kazimono, the confident elder sister. Unlike her sister, Shinobu prefers keeping demons away at arm’s length and out of reach. Her specialty and most of her attacks revolve around the usage of her trusty machine gun. Perfect for shredding holes into monsters.
Shinobu can also summon ghostly specters that will revolve around the currently controlled character, presumably protecting them from various attacks. In a pinch, Shinobu can also lob a grenade (or three) at her opponents, causing a massive area of effect damage.

Cooperation is Key
One unique thing that Grim Guardians: Demon Purge does is the ability to let characters swap between each sister on the fly. This can create some exhilarating combat encounters as players can seamlessly weave each sister’s abilities one after another, creating a symphony of demon-slaying. In terms of platforming and exploration, there will be times that the sisters will need to use their heads. That is, to reach high up places, one sister may need to stand on the head of another.
Also included is a 2-player Co-op mode wherein each player controls one of the two siblings. They will run and gun everything in their path. In case one of the sisters is downed, the surviving member can run up to their fallen comrade and revive them, as is standard with most co-op games.

Grim Guardians: Demon Purge
Grim Guardians: Demon Purge looks like an excellent entry into the 2D action sidescroller space. One thing to note is that the game is not aMetroidvania, likeRitual of the Nightis. Instead, it is purely inspired by Castlevania, and all that entails. Its look and feel seems to perfectly encapsulate the vintage style that was famous at the time.
Combat and platforming also both look really tight. Action is satisfying, and there’s a good amount of blood and gore giving the fights a bit more weight and oomph. However, it is still too early to tell as the game has just been announced. Grim Guardians: Demon Purge should be in good hands, however, considering that Curse of the Moon has pretty good reviews over on Steam.
Slay Together
Grim Guardians: Demon Purgedoesn’t have a release date just yet, nor a price available. It will be available on most major consoles (though it seems like the Xbox Series S was excluded for some reason?). Stay tuned for more news!
