Summary
HBO’sHarry PotterTV show has now found its showrunner and a director. After a series of successful film adaptations, HBO is now set to bring the world of J.K. Rowling’s beloved novel series to life on the small screen. The upcomingHarry PotterTV showis expected to serve as a more faithful retelling of the source material, with one season planned for each of the seven books. It was reported earlier this year that the search for the series' showrunner was underway.
Warner Bros. Discovery reveals thatFrancesca Gardiner will serve as showrunner and executive producer for theHarry PotterTV show. What Francesca Gardiner & Mark Mylod Worked On Before The Harry Potter TV Show
The J.K. Rowling Adaptation Is In Good Hands
Gardiner was one of three creatives mentioned in reports earlier this year as HBO narrowed down the list of candidates to serve as showrunner. Gardiner is evidently the one who was deemed to have the best pitch and creative vision for theHarry PotterTV show, and it’s not surprising given some of her past work. Gardiner has written episodes ofThe Man in the High Castle,The Rook, andHis Dark Materials. She also served as a producer onKilling Eve,His Dark Materials, and the critically-acclaimedSuccession.
Successionseason 4 brought the hit HBO series to an end last spring.
Mylod has also worked on a number of high-profile projects. The filmmaker has directed episodes ofGame of Thrones,Entourage,Shameless, andSuccession. He’s also directing multiple episodes ofThe Last of Usseason 2, which is due out next year. In addition to also serving as an executive producer onSuccession, Mylod also directed 2022’sThe Menu, a well-reviewed thriller starring Anya Taylor-Joy.
On paper, at least, theHarry PotterTV show seems to be in good hands. Both Gardiner and Mylod have experience working on some acclaimed projects, and both also have a history with HBO. A strong creative vision behind the camera is, however, only part of the puzzle, and a lot will depend on the on-screen talent that Gardiner and Mylod assemble to take the place ofHarry Pottercastmembers like Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson. Hopefully, casting announcements for theHarry PotterTV show will arrive over the next few months.
