Riley’s “Deep Dark Secret” Is That She Set The Rug On Fire (Like Marty McFly)
“If you guys ever have kids, and one of them, when he’s eight years old, accidentally sets fire to the living room rug… go easy on him.”
In the post-credits scene atthe end ofInside Out 2, Joy returns to the Vault to pay a visit to the Deep Dark Secret. She tells him that it’s time to reveal the secret andhe reluctantly tells her that Riley is the one who burnt the rug. Apparently, at one point, a hole was burned in Riley’s parents’ rug. Riley denied having done it and the mystery remained unsolved. But, according to the Deep Dark Secret, it was Riley who burned the rug all along.
This is a subtle reference to an obscurequote fromBack to the Future. Just before Marty McFly heads back to 1985, he tells his reconciled parents, “If you guys ever have kids, and one of them, when he’s eight years old, accidentally sets fire to the living room rug… go easy on him.”Both Riley and Marty set fire to their parents’ rugat a young age. The difference is that Riley got away with it, while Marty was in a world of trouble.
