It was already looking likeThe Councilwas shaping up to be a deep narrative-driven adventure. And the latest trailer of the game shows that depth extends to the gameplay mechanics, where the RPG roots of the series are exposed.
Historical conspiracy-drama The Council shows its RPG roots
The Councilis a narrative-focused adventure about a secret society in the late 1700s. The society has some illustrious members, such as historical luminaries Napoleon, George Washington, and the main character, Louis de Richet. Vying for political power will high on the agenda, but you’ve got a more personal stake too: You’re searching for your mum, who went missing on the island. Check out the trailer below.
A few words from the Council’s game director, Sylvain Sechi
The latest trailer gives us more of an idea about how the game will play. It’s in the adventure genre. However, game director Sylvain Sechi says that the core of the game is an RPG, reflected by distinct character classes and skill trees. For example, diplomats are talented negotiators, while detectives excel at investigating the world around them.
“We’ve got things like questioning, conviction, manipulation, very dialog-focused skills. We’ve also got more knowledge-based skills like linguistics and erudition that allow you to better understand the 18th century world in which the characters live. The vast majority of choices in The Council have short, medium, and long-term consequences, both cosmetic and very real. Some choices are particularly critical and allow for very different outcomes depending on the chosen branch.” - Sylvain Sechi.

In terms of combat,The Councilwill use a “Confrontation System”. Sechi says that it’ll “transform traditional RPG combat gameplay into something narrative and dialog-based.” Which reminds me a bit of the insult duels from theMonkey Islandgames. Somehow I doubt that this is what he has in mind. We’ll have to wait and see.
So, do you you fancy joining a secret society inThe Council? If so, you don’t have long to wait. The first part of this episodic narrative adventure will be released on Steam on March 13th.
