Marvel Studios' TV arm has been a mixed bag of huge successes and catastrophic lows. One of the former is the wildly inventive animated showWhat If…?, which ushered in a new era of the multiverse. Most of us are aware that the latest season of the animated series will premiere on Disney+ on Dec. 22, but it will also be the final season. Now Marvel TV boss Brad Winderbaum has revealed there are reasons for doing so.
What If…?, released in 2021, is an MCU anthology series thatexplores alternate timelinesin the multiverse and depicts the possibilities of events if things went differently. The last two seasons have addressed a variety of intriguing scenarios, from Dr. Strange as a love-obsessed madman to Hela coming into possession of the Ten Rings. With the third season on the horizon, fans are excited to see what Jeffrey Wright’s Uatu the Watcher will bring to the table in terms of new anomalies, especially since it will be the final season.

In a recent interview withEntertainment Weekly, Winderbaum discussed what viewers can anticipate from the final season ofWhat If…?and why now is the best time to end the series. He also disclosed some key details regardingthe highly anticipated animated seriesMarvel Zombies, including how it will be tied to the zombie episode ofWhat If…?He stated:
“There are bigger universe reasons to culminate it now. If you’re a fan of the overall MCU, you’ll notice that the first season premiered after Loki season 1, when the Sacred Timeline blossomed into a multiverse and all of a sudden all these new stories emerged. That was when we started telling those stories in What If…? And at the end of season 2, when the Watcher takes Peggy to look out at the multiverse, it’s taken the form of the tree of stories that Loki sits in the middle of at the end of Loki season 2.

So the culmination of season 3 and of the series itself does fit in to the overall MCU tapestry in that way. That being said, there’s infinite stories to tell with What If…?, and time will tell whether we make more. But for now it is, I think, a beautiful way to end this era and to culminate the story of the Watcher. It came about organically as the rest of the MCU was coming together and the Multiverse Saga was starting to find its conclusion. It just feels like the right time.”
‘What If…?’s Zombie Episode Serves as a Prologue to ‘Marvel Zombies’
What If…?Season 1, Episode 5 is one of the most incredible scenarios to explore in the animated series, as the Avengers, who are supposed to protect the world, are infected with a zombie virus, leaving the surviving heroes to find a cure. Apparently, Marvel is planning to connect the events to the franchise’s next big thing (animated),Marvel Zombies, rather than simply leaving it as a standalone episode.
Every Episode of Marvel’s What If…? on Disney+, Ranked
What If…? has become one of the best entries in the MCU, and with two seasons and 18 episodes, this is how every episode stacks up to one another.
In the same conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Winderbaum explained that whileWhat If…?concludes with the third season, the zombie episode will function as a prologue to the upcoming series. It’s very likely thatMarvel Zombieswill begin with scenes from the aforementioned episode and build on the premise throughout the series. What If…?Season 3 will premiere on Disney+ on Dec. 22, with new episodes rolling out until Dec. 29.
