Netflix’s newest assassin thriller film,The Mother,brandishes the ferocity of a mother’s instinct, but with a twist and a gun. The streaming platform has since released a trailer and now, per arelease from Netflix, has a release date set for the film. Rather appropriately chosen, the action flick will premiere on May 12, just in time for Mother’s Day.

The Motheris the latest project in lead actress Jennifer Lopez’s ever-growing archive of multi-genre work. The film’s premise focuses on Jennifer’s character, an ex-assassin living in complete, frigid isolation, leading a remote existence in the woods to move on from her dangerous past life. But, like anyone who’s lived with a perpetual target on their back, she still trains daily should the worst happen. In a veryJohn Wick-esque manner, however, her quiet attempt at a normal life gets viciously uprooted when she finds out that a gang of her former enemies has kidnaped her daughter. Despite having done everything possible to keep her daughter’s existence an absolute secret, the threat drives her out of hiding to find and rescue her daughter from the thugs who’d likely kill her out of revenge.

Jennifer Lopez, whose character is still unnamed, stars alongside Joseph Fiennes (The Handmaid’s Tale), who appears in the trailer to be a villain sent to kill her, Lucy Paez (Silencio) as her daughter, as well as Jesse Garcia (Narcos), Omari Hardwick (Pieces of Her), and others. The film is directed by Niki Caro (Mulan), with writers Andrea Berloff, Peter Craig, and Misha Green.
