The casting announcement marks another ticked box moment in James Gunn’s rebuilding of the DCU franchise. As well as many fans celebrating the newest addition to the legion of Supergirls, the original star to depict the Girl of Steel on the big screen,Helen Slater, shared her own personal congratulations to Alcock with a special Instagram post. As well as sending her love to Alcock, Slater’s post also featured a shout-out to the other stars who have played Supergirl in live-action since her first appearance on screen 40 years ago this year. Check out the post below:

James Gunn’s ambitious DC Universe plans may have been moving slowly over the last year, but now things are starting to come together, withSuperman: Legacyset to debut in 2025 and other titles includingSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrowarriving not too long after that. Earlier this year,David Corenswet was handed the keys to Krypton, and that is another casting choice that has been generally well received, especially for such a touchy subject following the departure of Henry Cavill from the role.

The DCU is about to step into new territory with its shared universe uniting Superman and Supergirl as part of a larger narrative. Despite the family connection between the pair of Kryptonians, they have never shared screen time in a live-action movie before – discounting theCGI recreations that appeared inThe Flash– making Gunn’s plans for this new iteration of the comic book world of DC even more exciting.

While James Gunn has played coy about Supergirl’s potential appearance inSuperman: Legacy, the planned connections of the DC Universe suggests that Kara Zor-El’s story will be intricately linked to that of her cousin. How everything fits together is something that will become clear in good time, but for now fans will just have to watch and wait as the threads of the DCU are slowly drawn together by one half of the team pulling the strings.

James Gunn Ignites Backlash Over Supergirl Casting, Seemingly Snubs The Flash’s Sasha Calle

Fans react to James Gunn’s revelation Milly Alcock was the “first person” who came to his mind for Supergirl; snubbed Sasha Calle.

What Do We Know About Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow?

Currently, James Gunn has been pretty fixed onSuperman: Legacy, and despite being asked frequently by fans about the other upcoming movies and TV shows heading to screens as part of the DCU’s first wave of projects, he has remained mostly tight-lipped on the matter.

Right now, with Supergirl finally being cast, the search for a director forSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrowis underway. Although there have been some who have questionedwhy Gunn is already casting the role without a directorbeing on board to give their opinion, it seems that, as usual, theGuardians of the Galaxyhelmer has proved that he really knows his stuff when bringing the right people to roles as far as fans are concerned.

Some fans are still feeling hard done by overSasha Calle’s fleeting appearance as SupergirlinThe Flashseemingly being a one-off gig, as a lot of fans wanted to see her continue on in the role. Whether Alcock’s performance as Supergirl, when it finally comes, can win over this section of the fandom is probably going to be the deciding factor in just how successful the movie will be.
