WhileThe Apprenticeand Sebastian Stan’s performance in it may have been affected by current events,A Different Manfortunately allows the actor to shineaway from the political spotlight. The film’s premise reads: “An inspiring actor undergoes a radical medical procedure to drastically transform his appearance. However, his new dream face quickly turns into a nightmare as he becomes obsessed with reclaiming what was lost.” Stan wears prosthetics to more closely resemble Adam Pearson, an actor who has Neurofibromatosis (NF). Pearson plays Oswald in the film, an actor with NF who, unlike Stan’s character Guy, is comfortable and confident with who he is.

What follows is a psychological thriller that has Stan playing against type and Adam Pearson in a fantastic role following his previous collaboration with director Aaron Schimberg onChained for Life, a film that explores similar themes of self-acceptance and empathy.A Different Mantakes a darker route than Schimberg’s last film, with Stan’s character completely changing his identity (Named “Edward” before his surgery, changing it to “Guy” afterward) before wondering if he’s made a mistake after seeing his former self reflected in someone else. The result is afilm that shouldn’t be missed.

‘A Different Man’ & Sebastian Stan Were Both Met With Critical Acclaim

Sebastian Stan’s slow descent into insecurity and jealousy as Edward/Guy is perhaps one of the best performances of the year. Moreover, the film keeps itself from straying too far into unremarkable thriller territory thanks to the elements of black comedy, largely thanks to the chemistry between Stan and Pearson as the two lead characters. Thematically playing different versions of the “same” character, Edward’s obsessive qualities contrast with Oswald’s confident and laid-back nature, which leads to the most meta and hilarious moments in the film.
