Warner Bros Discovery’s gaming, studios, and streaming division could soon be acquired by Sony, following a major restructuring within the company.
Chaos and Restructuring at Warner Bros Discovery
There’s chaos at Warner Bros Discovery. While it’s not the first major corporation to face a deep crisis, things have taken a dramatic turn in Burbank. On July 22, 2025, the company was split into two separate entities.
On one side isWBD Global Networks, which includes the cable TV networks (CNN, TNT Sports, Discovery, etc.). On the other isWBD Streaming & Studios, which encompasses production studios, the HBO Max streaming platform, and the video game division.

Unless something unexpected happens, the split will become official by mid-2026, withDavid Zaslavset to lead WBD Streaming & Studios—unlessSony steps in first.
Sony Reportedly Interested in Buying WBD Streaming, Games & Studios
According to aSEScoopsreport shared byInsider Gaming, Sony is interested in acquiring WBD’s assets in streaming, video games, and studios.
That would meanPlayStationcould obtain Warner’s gaming studios and licenses, whileSony Pictureswould expand its production portfolio with HBO Max and its content. This would be a major move with significant industry implications.

Rumors of this deal have circulated since 2022, when experts speculated Sony might pursue a purchase ofWarner Bros Games. Could this finally become reality?
Sony May Acquire Part of Warner Bros Discovery
The recent SEScoops report highlightsSony’s strong interest in buying WBD Streaming & Studios, the half of the company that includes HBO Max, its video game division, and its film/TV production studios.
Hades 2 Prepares For Its Full Release With a New Update
Hades 2 nears full release with a major update and final touches on Melinoë’s journey.
However, sources close to the matter say Sony is only interested ifWarner agrees to sell those assets separately, as the Japanese company has no interest in acquiring the cable TV business.

The Warner Bros restructure won’t be finalized until mid-2026, soSony may waitto see if WBD Global Networks operates fully independently.
Put simply,Sony is willing to acquire WBD Streaming & Studios only if it’s fully detached from WBD Global Networks. It’s still early, so details remain unclear.

“Sources said Sony was only interested in acquiring WBD’s streaming, studio, and gaming assets if they were separated from its cable networks, which have lost millions of households as viewers abandon traditional cable packages,” the report says.
This is understandable, asWBD Global Networks will take on Warner Bros Discovery’s total debt of $37 billion, a scenario already under consideration last year.
Warner Bros Games Now Focuses Only on Major IPs
We’ll have to wait and see how it plays out. Another major development is thatWarner Bros Games has now narrowed its focus to just four major franchises:
Everything outside these licenses has reportedly been scrapped.
Recent failures likeSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice LeagueandMultiversushave left deep scars at Warner Bros. Just a few months ago, the company shut downMonolith Productions(canceling theWonder Womangame),Player First Games, andWB Games San Diego.
