‘Solo Leveling’ Appeals to Both Anime & Gaming Fans

Solo Levelingfollows the character Sung Jinwoo, a weak hunter in a dungeon-crawling world where battles with monsters are commonplace. A near-death experience in a dungeon soon leads Jinwoo to discover a way to “level up solo,” and become one of the strongest hunters in the world all on his own, changing his life forever. The anime takes inspiration and narrative structurefrom all sorts of role-play games(RPGs), something that Purini believes has contributed to the series' success, saying:

“The most important thing is the theme of the story. It has a lot of themes from gaming. If you are an RPG player or play first-person-shooting games, you understand it. When people see those themes in a narrative story format like this, it is new, and it is different, and it is a language they speak, and that makes it much more compelling.”
