Matt Reeves’Cloverfieldfilm series began as an absolute success story, but not all great stories persist till the end. In that well-established trend, the 2008 film was also a fault bearer as the film’s third part earned a middling to almost-poor critical review upon release. Now, with enough time having passed since the director showed any indication of reprising his science-fiction saga, the fandom has been stirring with impatience for a singular morsel of hope regarding the status of the franchise.

Matt Reeves Says He Is Open to a FourthCloverfieldMovie
Director ofThe Batman, Matt Reeves earned an enviable reputation for having an intricately twisted mind, after launching his sci-fi action thrillerCloverfieldin 2008. That mind was on a magnificent display last year when DC was treated to a haunting vision of Gotham’s Dark Knight taking on multiple villains at once in the critically acclaimed and highly successful film.

But with the director now occupied elsewhere, the window of opportunity for a fourthCloverfieldfilm grows thinner. Besides, the poor reception toThe Cloverfield Paradoxin 2018 somewhat dulled down the fan enthusiasm surrounding the subject. When asked about the possibility of a fourth addition to the series, Matt Reeves claimed toComicBook:
“I think if another story were to present itself where I was like, ‘Gosh I have to tell that story.’ It’s not impossible. I wouldn’t say that’s a for-sure thing, but I would never say never.”

But with the widespread success and fan frenzy that came withThe Batman, Reeves finds himself becoming increasingly engrossed in expanding the universe of his DC creation. He is currently working on and promoting the expansion of the Bat-Verse, beginning with the spin-off series,The Penguinon HBO Max.

Nothing comes easy for visionaries and dreamers. But the proper challenge lies in the process of making those dreams and visions come true. Matt Reeves, too, was faced with the same challenge and like all great yet troubled artists, the director struggled with putting words to his ambition and transferring those words into a fully conceptualized picture on the screen.
“I can’t give you information about [a 4th Cloverfield film] of course because that’s the way Cloverfield works. To be honest with you, you never know what you’re going to do. Even though my work is all genre work, I have to feel something personal about it. Cloverfield is very much about my anxieties.”

Despite there being aCloverfieldsequel in the form of10 Cloverfield Lane, it was essentially J.J. Abrams’s approach to the hit found-footage film series that had otherwise begun as the brainchild of Matt Reeves. With the original three-part anthology series yet to be realized in its full, uncorrupted potential, a proper sequel in the form ofCloverfield 2is prime for development. Babak Anvari is currently working on the film with a script penned by Joe Barton.
