Netflix’s action spy thriller,The Night Agent, has finally returned for its second season, and many fans have already binged all 10 episodes. This season follows Peter (Gabriel Basso) all the way to Thailand on his first field mission as a night agent. However, as was the case with the first season, his situation quickly devolves, and he finds himself evading those seemingly on his side. Once again, there’s a leak from someone on the inside, but this time, he believes the Night Action program is comprised. As such, he’s on his own and starts working to find evidence of his claims before attempting to take anything to President Travers (Kari Matchett). Unfortunately, his plans don’t unfold as he would have hoped.

Unlike other streaming platforms, Netflix drops every single episode of the majority of its original series at once. While many enjoy it, it can be a double-edged sword when it takes years for the following seasons to come to fruition. For those who have devoured Season 2 ofThe Night Agent, they’re undoubtedly in search of an adjacent show to fill the void while they wait for Season 3. Thankfully,Hulu has the perfect series to scratch that spy thriller itch, and because it has six seasons, it’s sure to tide viewers over for quite some time. Starring Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys,The Americans, which originally premiered on FX, is an excellent replacement for viewers who are already missingThe Night Agent.

What Is ‘The Americans’ About?

Is It Based on a True Story?

The Americans

The Americansfollows Elizabeth (Russell) and Philip Jennings (Rhys), who appear to be like any other regular married couple living in Falls Church, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, D.C., during the 1980s. The parents of two teenagers, Paige (Holly Taylor) and Henry (Keidrich Sellati), and the owners of a family-run travel agency, the couple are as American as they come. However, unbeknownst to everyone they know, including their American-born children,Elizabeth and Philip are actually KGB spies working to obtain information for the Soviet Union.

When anFBI counterintelligence agentnamed Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich) moves in across the street from the Jennings, it provides the perfect opportunity for Philip and Elizabeth to befriend their neighbor and gain access to a pivotal United States agency. As the show progresses, Philip and Stan become best friends, which clearly presents a host of complications and interesting developments for the series. Given Philip’s loyalties to the Soviet Union are seemingly laxer than Elizabeth’s, his intentions are often questioned by his wife as his relationships appear to cloud his judgment.

‘FBI’s New Season Is Setting Up a Fourth Spinoff With an Absolutely Ridiculous Title

It was only a matter of time before the world of Dick Wolf’s ‘FBI’ collided with another federal agency.

The series begins in the wake of President Ronald Reagan’s inauguration in January 1981 and concludes its narrative in December 1987. Shortly afterward, the United States and the Soviet Union signed the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, which served as a major step in ending the Cold War. WhileThe Americansdoesn’t purport to be a completely true story, the series is indeed inspired by the very real Russian sleeper agents who were arrested in America in 2010 following a decade-long investigation by the FBI. However, the show’s creator, Joe Weisberg, felt a Cold War setting would make for a better narrative, and he wasn’t wrong.

By exploring the conflict between Washington’s FBI office and the KGB Rezidentura nearby,The Americansoffers viewersa top-notch spy thriller while simultaneously providing thought-provoking political commentary on the complex relations between the United States and Russia (formerly the Soviet Union). However, that isn’t to say the series can’t be enjoyed at face value. Interestingly, the series presents a sophisticated narrative without talking down to its audience or expecting them to have a master’s degree in history. Needless to say, it’s a phenomenally entertaining show.
