Last week, Realtech VR announced that they were remasteringTomb Raider1, 2 and 3. Even better, they were going to make them available free for owners of the original versions on Steam! Sounds too good to be true, right? So…it turns out that it was too good to be true. It’s been canned.

The teaser videos are gone and Realtech VR, the company that was supposedly handling the remasters, said in a tweet that it’s now focused on new AR and VR projects.
“After this episode, we are refocusing on new projects involving Augmented Reality on iOS and VR on PC. We are not more committed on third party license anymore.” - Realtech VR, via Twitter
Square Enixtold GamesIndustry that it was responsible for the kill order. The reason was that the remasters hadn’t actually been given the green light bySquare Enixin the first place. So, that’s a pretty good reason then. Here’sSquare Enix’s statement.
“While we always welcome passion and excitement for the Tomb Raider franchise, the remasters in question were initiated and advertised without seeking approval. As such, they were never officially sanctioned. Ensuring fans receive high quality gaming experiences is at the heart of our mission as a company, which requires all projects to go through proper channels.”
Realtech VR were responsible for the mobile versions of theTomb Raidergames, so they’d some previous experience withTomb Raider. The proposed remasters were going to be based on the mobile versions of the games.
