In this edition, we’re going to take a look at each of the titles, talk a little about each, and then explain why we think they deserve to be on the list. So join me now and find a mixture of some hidden gems and old favorites given a shiny new coat of paint.

Top 5 Upcoming RPGs Of April 2022

Last month we got some tactical titles, as well as more action packed games such as our number one Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin. This month we have some CRPG entries, a remaster of a classic JRPG, as well as some retro-inspired games with a challenging twist. Let’s get into the month of April 2022.

Honourable Mention: Solasta Crown of the Magister  - Lost Valley DLC

Release Date: April 14th

A new DLC is heading to the CRPGSolasta: Crown of the Magisteradding not only multiplayer but a new 1 to 12 campaign, taking players into the heart of the Dominion, new enemies, and nine new sub-classes (with one for each of currentClasses). Together with your party, you will adventure into the Valley, a land long forgotten and is currently ruled by the tyrant Orenetis. Your arrival will upset the political nature of this area.

TheDLCwill have great replayability as you weigh up which faction to join. Expect to meet newEnemiessuch as the Giants, Hags and Golems, meaning new challenges to face. A bevy of newDungeon Makercontent also joins in Lost Valley, including four new environments, new monsters, a free new quest system for Custom Adventures, new dialog system and new custom loot table system.

In case you missed it Solasta is a game where you embark upon turn-based, tactical combat adventures. The world is dynamic as bridges can collapse, walls and columns can be pushed over onto your foes. The title uses the Dungeons and Dragons SRD 5.1 ruleset.

Solasta: Crown of the Magisteris currently available on Steam. The DLC Lost Valley will be available on April 14th.

5. Black Desert Eternal Winter Expansion

Release Date: April 16th

Platform: PC, Playstation 4, Xbox One

Developer:  Pearl Abyss

A brand new expansion is heading to the fantasy MMORPG Black Desert called Eternal Winter. A new region located south of Drieghan is filled with snow-covered peaks, as well as treacherous snowstorms. The area is so cold that players will need to watch out for the Frostbite debuff that will slowly drain your health, meaning staying warm is key. But you can also travel around using a snowboard, a unique method of travel for the region.

This new Level 1 region to explore, means no matter if you’re a new or an existing player you may jump right in. It will also be host to new monster zones Murrowak’s Labyrinth, a deep mine full of iron, overrun by Queen Vercedes and her loyal legion of Murrowaks. Discover the Jade Starlight Forest and Erebjork the Dreadwinter Guardian, if you spot a blizzard it’s fair warning she is about to make an appearance.

A brand new class called the Destroyer of Ynix is heading to Calpheon, which so far has been teased with a few videos, with a character holding a long sword weapon. There’s a  new gear slot item called Artifact focusing on granting AP or DP when equipped. Be ready embark upon a questline centered around the Fallen God’s Armor Labreska’s Helmet.

Black Desert Onlineis currently available on PC, called Black Desert on consoles. The Eternal Winter Expansion sets to release on April 6th for Game Pass owners and a pre-order pack is available with bonus goodies.

4. Coromon

Release Date: March 31st

Platform: PC & Switch [Update - Switch version delayed]

A monster taming title with a twist Coromon, the pixel art styled creature catcher comes with cross-save, Nuzlocke features and more. Playing the role of a newly joined Battle Researcher of the global research society of Lux Solis, all seems to be going well on your first day…well until it doesn’t. A mysterious force attacks your workplace, meaning together your squad of Coromon (strange creatures that seem ok with you putting them to battle) fight the rising threat that sets to endanger the world of Velua.

If you like the idea of a game that pays homage to classic turn-based RPGs such as Pokemon with its pixel retro design, but with added challenges such as a range of difficulty modes, randomisers and even Nuzlocke rules, Coromon will be up your alley. With over 100 Coromons to catch, you will train them and battle them against your rivals. The game uses a stamina-based system, where every action will cost energy, making choosing your skills and attacks that more precious.

The Serpent Rogue

Expect a full JRPG narrative-inspired experience, as you quest through a number of regions of Velua, full of twists and turns as not everything is as it seems. If you prefer a more casual playthrough you may choose the easiest mode, or make your playthrough really challenging by wacking it up all the way to Insane Difficulty.

Coromonwill release on PC via Steam and Epic March 31st (which is basically April), and for Nintendo Switch. Cross-save is available between Switch and Steam versions. A demo is currently available on Steam.

3. The Serpent Rogue

Platform: PC, Playstation 5, Switch and Xbox Series X

Developer:  Sengi Games

Publisher:  Team17 Digital

Now for some action-adventure. The Serpent Rogue is an open world sandbox Action-RPG with roguelike elements, set in the medieval fantasy world of Mount Morbus. As an alchemist known as The Warden your mission is to craft, brew, boil and concoct mysterious potions to protect the realm from the Serpent Rogue and the lands from The Corruption.

This title sets to bring a wide variety of features including potion-making, with a number of effects such as transforming yourself into different creatures or giving yourself unique abilities. Tame creatures as well experiment with a number of mutations as you explore the mystical world. Fish, cook and forage for materials as well as craft yourself some weapons. Make sure to cook up a good meal before heading into battle, as your stamina will suffer while you’re hack ‘n’ slashing through terrible evils.

While the world and artstyle are on the side of macabre especially dressed as a plague doctor, there is a certain deadly beauty to the world of The Serpent Rogue.

The Serpent Roguewill release on April 16th for PC, Playstation 5, Switch and Xbox Series X. You can check out the demo available on Steam.

2. King Arthur: Knight’s Tale

Release Date: April 26th (leaves Early Access)

You may remember last month seeing King Arthur Knight’s Tale in our list, unfortunately it got delayed but the good news is that it’s unleashing its full launch this month.

Following the tale of Sir Mordred, the mortal enemy of King Arthur, considered to be the black knight in this universe, players will battle using tactical turn-based moves. Differing from the likes of XCOM or Phoenix Point players will be able to move all their units in a single turn.

Your quest won’t be easy as there will be some tough decisions to make throughout the game. Choices affect theMoralitysystem that the game features. Mordred can choose to remain trulyneutral, become moreRightfulor become more of aTyrant.

King Arthur Knight’s Talewill be leaving Early Access on April 26th for PC.

1. Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition

Release Date: April 7th

Platform: PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One

Developer: Square Enix

Our one number spot this month goes to the remaster Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition. This refreshed edition now comes in HD, adding upscaled graphics and revamped soundtrack. But that’s not all that comes with this edition, it also includes new features such as battle enhancements, auto-battle function, as well as screen resolution options.

Chrono Cross will take players on a journey that transcends both time and space, as it takes place across two parallel worlds. Playing as the main character Serge, as he travels to a parallel universe to save himself from his own demise. Along the way he’ll meet over 40 party members to team up with, in this interdimensional turn-based RPG. This edition also includes the Radical Dreamers game.

Chrono Cross uses turn-based battles with an accuracy system. Players will need to build up power or stamina to use Elements which are moves that you can usually use only once per battle. With a choice of three attack types, weak, normal and strong with different degrees of success rates players will need to decide which approach to take.
