You don’t need to swing the flashiest blade inAssassin’s Creed Shadowsto win a fight. You just need the one that actually fits how you play. And with so many katanas scattered around Japan, it’s easy to get stuck comparing numbers, perks, and passive effects that sound useful but don’t always hold up in real combat.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows: 10 Tips and Tricks We Wish We Knew Sooner
A list of helpful tips and tricks for new Assassin’s Creed Shadows players
Some katanas are built for stealth kills, others make posture breaks smoother, and a few give you little bonuses that can quietly carry you through the tougher sections of the game. So this list isn’t chasing big damage numbers or dramatic kill animations. It’s focused on katanas that are reliable, make sense in a fight, and don’t need a dozen layered mechanics to be effective.

8Iga’s Flame
Boost Your Affliction by Stacking Up Adrenaline Chunks
Iga’s Flame is all about stacking up pressure the longer a fight drags on. the more adrenaline chunks you have filled, the better you get atbuilding up status effectslike poison or bleed on your enemies. To be specific, for every chunk you have, your affliction buildup gets boosted by 2%.
This means if you’re good at holding your adrenaline and not blowing it all at once, your hits will start stacking nasty effects faster and faster. But you’ll have to head over to Mount Nukai in the Yamato province to find thisAssassin’s Creed Shadows weapon.

7Snakebite
Makes Posture Attacks Easier
Snakebite is perfect for those who like using tools in combat. Its main perk is that it restores your posture instantly after using a tool, like a smoke bomb or shuriken. This means you don’t have to worry about your posture meter getting stuck in the red when you’re trying to use a tool to get the upper hand.
To get your hands on this katana, you’ll need to finish a side quest called “The Fox, The Music” in the Wakasa region. It’s not locked behind a bunch of grinding, but you’ll have to put in a bit of time to clear the quest first.

6Masked Death
Requires Patience and Aggression
You can find the Masked Death tucked away in Shimagahara Valley, inside the Otogi Pass area in Iga Province. It’s locked inside a legendary chest. Normally, in the game, if you charge up an attack and then have to roll out of danger, you’d have to start charging all over again. But with this katana, your charge stays intact even after a dodge. That means you can react to enemy attacks without feeling like you’re wasting time or effort.
Masked Death fits best if you like mixing patience with aggression. It’s not about mindlessly hacking at enemies. Instead, you get to charge up powerful posture breakers, stay nimble when enemies swing at you, and then land heavy, fight-changing hits without losing your momentum.

5Dragon’s Edge
Great for Those Who Can Dodge and Follow Up with a Hit
If you like slipping around enemies and hitting them while staying light on your feet, Dragon’s Edge will feel natural in your hands. When you land a dodge attack, which is basically dodging an enemy’s swing and immediately countering with your own hit, Dragon’s Edge creates a small area-of-effect around you. It’s not a giant explosion or anything ridiculous, but it’s enough to tag any enemies who are crowding in.
All Allies in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Ranked
Whether you’re sneaking around as Naoe or stomping through a stronghold as Yasuke, picking the right ally can save you time, health and frustration.
Dragon’s Edge is all about leaning into dodge attacks — not heavy slashes, not wild parries, just staying mobile. Dodge an attack, swing back fast, let the AoE do some extra work for you. Getting Dragon’s Edge is straightforward if you stick with the story. You earn it by finishing the Act 3 quest called “Topple the Traitor,” which is part of the Shinbakufu (Onryo) storyline.

4Steel Blossom
Vaulting Made Easier
With Steel Blossom, if you vault over an enemy, your next posture attack charges up instantly. There’s no waiting, no slow buildup. You vault, you strike, and you break their guard right away. This opens up a pretty smooth way to dismantle tougher enemies without dragging the fight out. You don’t have to keep chipping away at their defense with basic swings. Just time your vaults well, hit them with that fully charged posture attack, and move on before they even know what happened.
You’ll need to complete the quest “Lost Honor” in Yamashiro Province to earn the Steel Blossom. During that quest, you go up against Ise Sadaoki, also known as The Fool, at Yamazaki Castle. Beat him, and Steel Blossom is yours.
3Violet Night
Inflict Poison
With Violet Night, every time you pull off a clean deflect (I’m not talking about a block, but a real, timed deflect) you poison the enemy. They won’t just take a hit; they’ll start bleeding out over time, which stacks up nicely if you’re constantly baiting attacks and punishing them.
You need to draw enemies into attacking you first, deflect at the right moment, and then let the poison soften them up while you either keep your distance or prepare the next move. To pick up the Violet Night, you have to take down Yuki Onna, a pretty nasty Yokai boss you find during a side quest called “The Yokai” in the Omi Province.
2Bloodshade
Bleeding Buildup
Normally, when you’re trying to inflict something like bleeding on an enemy, you have to keep hitting them in quick bursts otherwise, the buildup fades away. With Bloodshade, though, once you start stacking that bleed buildup, it stays there no matter how long you back off. You don’t have to keep the pressure nonstop. You can hit, dodge out, deal with a few distractions, and then come back without losing your progress on that bleeding effect.
How to Unlock Double Assassinations in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Double assassinations return in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Here’s how to add this skill to Naoe’s repertoire.
To get the Bloodshade, you’ll have to make your way to a ship parked off the coast near Osaka, in the Izumi Settsu region. It’s loaded with guards, so you’ll want to think smart. you’re able to either go stealthy (probably the safer bet) or be ready for a pretty messy fight. Swim out to it or find a boat, sneak around or fight your way through, and eventually you’ll find a chest hidden inside the ship that’s holding Bloodshade.
1Yami no Kage
Your Enemies Slap Themselves
Yami no Kage works pretty much like Violet Night, but it’s even better. When you deflect an attack it bounces 100% of that attack’s damage right back at the enemy. If you mess up the timing, nothing special happens. But if you get the timing right, the enemy basically smacks themselves in the face with their own power.
Getting your hands on Yami no Kage takes a little work. You’ll need to head into Harima Province and take on Hiraiyama Fort. The place is packed with Samurai Daisho you have to clear out first. Once you deal with them you’ll find the legendary chest hiding the katana inside the fort. It’s a classic setup: clean out the place, claim your prize.
