How to Begin Catching Pokémon on Your Phone

To get started on your Pokémon-catching mobile journey, you’ll need two things: a mobile device (Apple or Android) with the Google app installed, and a Google account. (Both the installation of the Google app, if you don’t already have it, and the creation of a Google account are free.)

At this time, the game is mobile-only and does not work on the desktop version of Google.

Once you’ve logged into your Google account, you’re ready to start catching ‘em all. You can begin your Pokémon journey simply by starting to type the names of each of the 151 original Pokémon, which we’ve provided a list of below. It’s best to catch them in order, because you’ll need to catch a certain number of Pokémon to earn Master Balls, which you’ll need to capture several of the legendary Pokémon, including Mewtwo. More on the process of capturing legendary Pokémon later.

Catching the 151 Original Pokémon on Your Phone

For the most part, catching the 151 original Kanto Pokémon on your phone and becoming a Google-proclaimed Pokémon master is as simple as searching the Pokémon’s name, i.e “Charmander,” into the Google search app on your phone. For Pokémon who share names with real-life words, like “Ditto,” you may have to be a little more specific and search for something like “Ditto Pokémon.”

Regardless, when you’ve searched for the Pokémon, a little Pokeball will pop up on the lower right-hand side of your screen. Tap on that, and you’ll see a little capture animation before you receive the message: “Gotcha! [Pokémon name] was caught.” Each time you capture a Pokémon, you’ll be brought back to the Google Pokémon tracker, which will tell you how many Pokémon you’ve caught and give you a hint towards capturing your next Pokémon.

Catching Legendary Pokémon on Your Phone

Just like the regular Kanto Pokémon, the legendary Pokémonthat make up the original 151 roster - Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Mewtwo, and Mew - can also be captured to complete your Google-fied Pokédex. It’s a little trickier to catch them, however. They’re gated behind catching a certain number of Pokémon, so you won’t be able to jump right in and immediately capture the legendaries and call it a day. You need to capture the following number of Pokémon to unlock each legendary:

In addition, capturing legendary Pokémon will require using a Master Ball. Master Balls are unlocked upon capturing 5, 20, 50, 100 and 150 Pokémon, and can be used on the corresponding legendary Pokémon that number unlocks. If you try to catch them using a regular Pokeball without meeting the requirements, the legendary Pokémon will break free of the ball and an error message will pop up, telling you that you need to come back after capturing a certain number of Pokémon.
